This was the project my team came up when I was a lead for Forge in Fall 2025. The idea was to add security to a public library box to expand the functionality of it. Specifically, we added a RFID reader and an electronic lock so Northeastern students can tap their student ID and retrieve items inside. This can be things such as chargers, pencils, etc. exclusively to Northeastern students.
The electronic lock was powered by 12V and controlled by a relay module. The brains of the system was a Raspberry Pi Pico. We added a screen and buttons for UI navigation.
I was responsible for overlooking the budgeting and timeline for this project. I upkept the KiCAD schematics and presented it at Forge's Fall 2025 showcase. It was a great learning experience as it was the first time I was a project manager for a project. If we had more than a semester to work on it, I'm sure we could have fully refined and implemented the project. Below are some photos from this project.
